My Development Projects

Here are some of the applications that I have developed. As I am just me. These should be considered as beta (still under actively development) and should be used at your own risk. They may still contain bugs, and other undesirable conditions. However, they are free to use, with the stipulation that they cannot be resold, bundled, or distributed for profit or economic incentive of any kind, including on any website that utilizes paid advertising including pay per click. I retain all rights to the works contained within the executables.

Circus Numbers

Version 1.2

In Circus Numbers the object is to help young children learn to count objects in a group or groups. And to associate the concepts of adding groups together, as well as to understand that groups of objects can be represented by a number. It like my other educational 'games' are intended to be practice drills, with some gamification elements, which should help make practicing more engaging. This application is not intended to be a substitute for formal instruction. There is no winning or losing, as that can have a negative impact on early learning, rather there are timed durations and then the game ends. With what has been intended to be a positive summary for the child and their parent or teacher to show improvement in the child's skills over time.

Medieval Math

Version 1.2

Defender your castle with multiplication! From a horde of invading fantastical creatures, with your fire breathing dragon.

Medieval Math was inspired in part by the concept of Dragon Mix, a solid-state software cartridge for the TI-99/4A. Dragon Mix featured a dragon defending a city while the player practiced multiplication and division. Medieval Math sort of reimagines that concept as a chalkboard medieval castle defense.

Fraction Fishing

Version 2.9

This game was inspired by an idea from and is subsequently dedicated to Isaac. It is low-key, timed drill for practicing combining proper fractions to create a whole number. The setting is a floating boat in which the player fishes using the arrows keys to lower a hook to catch the fish displaying the correct fraction which in combination with the fraction displayed in the fluffy cloud in the sky will equal one. When the player's hook is overlayed on the correct fish, press space bar to reel it in. The position of the sun moving overhead indicates the time remaining.

Alligator Math

Version 2.9

In 1983 Mary Anne Six programmed the educational game Alligator Mix for the TI-99/4A Home Computer. The game was released on a solid-state cartridge. This was the inspiration by Alligator Mix and my wife who a few years ago, complained that she was unable to find any basic addition and subtraction computer drills for her first and second grade students. Which worked on modern computers. Those available all leaned too much into game mechanics, with not enough focus on the subject matter and practicing basic skills.

Minus Moonbase

Version 1.9

Minus Moonbase is a subtraction skills practice drill, wrapped in a game type package. It incorporates a story line of a lunar base under threat by an asteroid shower. Using the bases plasma cannon the player targets incoming asteroids with the correct solutions to subsequently more challenging subtraction problems. to protect the base.

Prime Mining

Version 1.0

The Sieve of Eratosthenes is an ancient and systematic way to find prime numbers. Prime Mining is a digital interactive implementation of this ancient concept. With the intention of introducing children to prime numbers, multiples, composite numbers, and the Sieve of Eratosthenes. The player searches for mathematical patterns by mining numbered rocks. Composite numbers are broken into debris, while prime numbers are eventually revealed as gold. Intended to make an abstract idea visible, rather than reading a definition or memorizing a list, the child repeatedly uses multiplication patterns to discover why each number is prime or composite.

Fraction Crusher

Version 1.0

Sometime around 1984 or 1987 MECC had a fraction game called Crusher for the Apple iie. I have never owned an Apple iie, but from what I recollect the game involved crushing fractions in a factory. This is an adaptation of this concept in a junkyard crushing cars/fractions. I never had the opportunity to actually play the game. As I had a TI-99/4A at home and not an Apple Computer. Hopefully, no one connected with MECC takes offense at my using their concept nearly a half century later. As I am certain J.S. Bach will not object to my adapting his composition Invention II for the background music. Dedicated to Isaac.
